LuCa (ルカ) is an Italian restaurant that uses fresh vegetables and fish from the Miura Peninsula in a luxurious way. The entrance is located in a hidden place in the building, providing a quiet atmosphere where you can enjoy lunch and dinner. While strolling through the historic Western-style houses in the Yamate area of Yokohama and shopping in Motomachi, why not visit LuCa?
With its pink walls and mint green sliding doors, LuCa exudes an atmosphere that seems to belong in the outskirts of an Italian town. Located on Shiohokizaka, leading from the bustling Motomachi to the Yamate area, this Italian restaurant is marked by an open sign hanging on the wall along the road. As you proceed along the wall, you’ll see the entrance lights.
The cozy interior makes you forget that you are in the heart of Yokohama, with a quiet and sepia-colored world to get lost in. The name of the restaurant, LuCa, comes from the Italian word for “light,” and true to its name, the antique lighting gives a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Owned by chef Shisho Kanaoka and his wife, who run the restaurant as a couple, LuCa promises a menu that highlights the flavor of the ingredients. Kanaoka, originally from Yokosuka, trained at a local izakaya run by fishermen, where he learned the basics of Japanese cuisine, such as making dashi and filleting fish. He later discovered Italian cuisine, which awakened his appreciation for the flavors of vegetables. Drawing on his past experiences, he creates beautifully balanced lunches and dinners that bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients.
The “LuCa lunch” during lunchtime is recommended. The first course is a seasonal vegetable potage soup made with vibrant vegetables grown on the Miura Peninsula. Kanaoka himself visits local markets on his days off to pick out the best seasonal vegetables to ensure that the soup is bursting with the essence of the season.
For the third course, guests can choose from pasta and risotto. The signature dish of the restaurant is the “Shirasu and Fresh Seaweed Cream Pasta,” which is made with fresh seaweed simmered in fresh cream. The fresh whitebait is sourced from the Sashima Hiratoshimaru, a fishery that Kanaoka trained at in Yokosuka.
After the meal, it is recommended to enjoy a dessert with a drink. During the visit, a “Compote of Apples” simmered in red wine topped with a large scoop of ice cream was ordered. The coffee, made from beans roasted with bamboo charcoal, has a rich and mellow flavor without any acidity.
LuCa is an Italian restaurant that highlights the deliciousness of its ingredients. The restaurant also offers deli takeout, which can add a touch of elegance to home parties and other gatherings. Be sure to savor the Italian dishes made with fresh ingredients at LuCa.
